MRI / CT

What do you need to know about MRI and CT Imaging?
At Athens Orthopedic Clinic we use advanced imaging technology to diagnose and treat orthopedic conditions with precision. If your provider has recommend an MRI or CT scan, here is what you need to know.

What Types of Conditions Are Diagnosed with MRI / CT?
- Injuries or conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles or the spine.
- Severity of damage or degeneration
- Plan for surgery or other intervention
- Monitor healing progress after a procedure
How is this test performed?
An MRI typically takes 30 – 60 minutes. You will lie very still in a tube-shaped machine while images are captured. We will provide headphones to protect your ears from loud sounds that occur while capturing the images.
A CT is usually a shorter scan, lasting 10-15 minutes. You might need to hold your breath briefly while these images are taken, to keep the body still. A technician will guide you through the process.

What if I am claustrophobic?
How do I prepare?
Wear comfortable clothing without buttons, zippers or other metal details. Inform your provider if you have any medical implants or conditions that may affect your imaging.
Depending on the scan, you may need to fast for a few hours beforehand, but your doctor will advise you of any special requirements for your particular scan.
